Thickened Basement Membrane
This usually requires a PAS stain to show it up but it is a clue to Lupus erythematosus Dermatomyositis and also to Lichen sclerosus et atrophicus.
It is difficult to separate lupus and dermatomyositis histologically but follicular pluging and involvement of the hair follicle is more suggestive of lupus erythematosus.
Lichen sclerosus will have some collagen thickening in the papillary dermis in a typical case and can also show follicular pluging.
